Understanding Fractions
A fraction represents a part of a whole. When we divide something into equal parts, each part is a fraction of the whole.
Key Idea: A fraction has two parts — the top number (numerator) tells us how many parts we have, and the bottom number (denominator) tells us how many equal parts the whole is divided into.
Writing Fractions
A fraction is written with one number over another, separated by a line:
$$\frac{a}{b}$$where a is the numerator (parts we have) and b is the denominator (total equal parts).
For example, if you cut a pizza into 8 equal slices and eat 3 slices, you have eaten:
$$\frac{3}{8}$$of the pizza.
Real-World Examples
| Situation | Fraction | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Half of a cake | $\frac{1}{2}$ | 1 out of 2 equal parts |
| A quarter of an hour | $\frac{1}{4}$ | 15 minutes out of 60 |
| 3 out of 5 students passed | $\frac{3}{5}$ | 3 parts out of 5 total |
Practice
Try It: Can you write a fraction?
If a glass is filled to the middle, what fraction of the glass is full? Think about it — the answer is $\frac{1}{2}$!
Remember: The denominator can never be zero. Division by zero is undefined, so $\frac{a}{0}$ has no meaning.
